As you might know, the “Great Gatsby” movie is coming soon and it got me thinking; does history repeat itself? In modern times, celebrities are definitely into vintage but they put it into a different perspective, or telling the audience a story through their clothes. My inspiration for this piece is Daisy Buchanan, a character in “The Great Gatsby” and lover of Jay Gatsby; her fashion is iconic and will last for years. All you need is a headpiece, a flattering dress and pearls.

Drop Waist Dresses: The 1920s were known as the Jazz Age, and the drop waist dresses were the look of the decade. Back then, it had a lot of sparkles, glamour and a little bit of couture if you weren’t from old money. The flapper look carried on for centuries, and celebrities now have a different twist to the classic look, such as Karen Fairchild wearing Gucci. She has the same silhouette but also has a modern print. The drop waist dress can go either elegant and alluring or too vintage. This dress (House of Fraser, $60, houseoffraser.com) has the embellishments on the collar and not on the dress so that the embellishments don’t overwhelm whomever is wearing it. The pink blends in to any type of color very well. If you’re wearing a dress like Fairchild, you don’t need to use many accessories.

Stockings: Stockings can look fashion-forward or too old-lady, so you want to be careful choosing what kind you want. I suggest going for a darker color instead of white because you want to look youthful. You might want to even try stockings that have designs on them, because the dress itself isn’t going to be too gaudy, but only if your dress doesn’t have a lot of print or embellishments. You’ll still look classy but also fun.

Pearls: Pearls (Forever21, $9, forever21.com or in stores) are a great statement piece, but if you carry too much of it, you’ll look like an old lady. If you’re going to wear any dress (especially an LBD), a collar necklace or a long necklace should do the trick. If you do decide to wear a long necklace, try tying the end into a knot to give off a true 1920s vintage look.

Headpieces: Headpieces (Forever21, $4 forever21.com or in stores) are making a big statement in the fall; you can look for elegant pieces like floral that cover the top of your forehead. Try looking for pieces that have sparkles, pearls, diamonds or crystals and even a big bow to get a 1920s look instead of just any piece that gives you a hippie look, which isn’t a bad either.

The only bad thing is that the movie doesn’t come out until 2013, but this article should help you wait a bit longer for the anticipated movie.
